An evocative installation exploring African diasporic cosmologies and spiritual practices. A collaboration between two artists and brothers--Thomas Allen Harris and Lyle Ashton Harris. Engaging symbols and myths from hybrid religions such as Santeria, Condomble, Voodoo and Egyptology, the work presents an insightful and provocative anthropology by drawing upon the transformative power of African diasporic aesthetics and European avant guard cinematic representations of mythology and mysticism. These staged theatrical performances are richly evocative tableaus that draw on pagan, aboriginal and African diasporic iconography's. Moving through the past, present and future, Alchemy uses digital technologies such as light-jet lazer 5000 digital imagery and DVD format video to usher in something new. The installation features nine large photographs and three wall-sized video projections.

ALCHEMY is a complex narrative investigation of the concept of "the crossroads" and the transformative power of Eshu, the Yoruba diety and guardian of the crossroads. The exhibition space, in a sense, represents this crossroads. In this modern day temple, the viewers will encounter the Harris brothers interpretation of these mythologies--Oshun, goddesses of the river surrendering to Yemaya, goddesses of the sea, Anubis, Lord of the dead, overseeing a mummification ritual, and the procession of the Sacred Twins who stand with Eshu to protect one at the dangerous point of the crossroads.

Reflecting on the impact of travel on their work in a recent interview the artists state: this project comes out of our own experience of aesthetic and cultural hybridization from living and working within communities across the African Diaspora, whether in Paris, London, Ouagadougou, Bahia, Rio De Janeiro, Dar -Es-Salaam, Nairobi, Caracas, Belize, Veracruz, New York, etc.
